Generis was selected to design the visitor infrastructure for the remains and the new museum of the former palace of Brussels, an archaeological site located under the city’s ‘Place Royale’ square.
With services ranging from an initial analysis and the subsequent development of alternative visitor routing scenarios to the scenographic design of the museum, Generis has created an ambitious concept which includes:
. the design of the visual identity and the complete information system;
. the design of explanatory exhibits: audiovisual products and scale models;
. the design of the lighting plan of the archaeological site;
. the design of the museum’s scenography and furniture.
Our concept was elaborated with the utmost respect for the specifications linked to the preservation of the archaeological exhibits and the constraints associated with this listed heritage site.
A scenographic concept in perfect harmony with the venue, highlighting the unique destiny of these historic monuments as well as the curious burial of rue Isabelle, which used to be open to daylight.
Generis has created the scenography of the Museum of Glass in Charleroi.
Our concept explores the key characteristics of this brilliant material by playing with combinations of reflection, transparency and lustre.
A scenography which creates space and rhythm for this vast collection with its comprehensive coverage of the broad spectrum of distinctive techniques, periods and artistic approaches.
A tailor-made project designed both to magnify spectacular individual exhibits and to highlight wider stylistic contexts.
An interesting challenge in view of the purpose-built premises, which nonetheless raised complex questions in terms of visitor routing and technical set-up.
The Monuments and Sites Directorate (Direction des Monuments et Sites) of the Brussels-Capital Region has entrusted Generis with the graphic design of a series of walking maps published in order to raise awareness of the less-known heritage of the city’s communes and of the history of their built environment.
The need to develop an effective information structure for the complex editorial content was one of the key considerations for this assignment. This is the kind of challenge we enjoy!
Following a detailed analysis, Generis produced a striking, original design combining a full set of maps and recommended itineraries.
The end product, a range of brochures personalised to the various communes, has met with great success.
An example of a complete carte blanche for a scenography presenting the museum’s latest purchases and donations.
And an occasion to present this less-known aspect of the curator’s role: the scope to embrace a personal vision, enrich the collection on a permanent basis and enable contemporary artists to make their mark alongside older works.
The exhibition is divided into six thematic sections. Every section is introduced by an installation showcasing the intriguing correlations between two iconic exhibits (an older item and a recent acquisition).
A subtle approach to the use of colour and to the presence of text in the exhibition area.
Generis frequently produces exhibition catalogues and publications on topics such as architecture, heritage, collections and the environment.
We have been told that our approach is musical. We structure our publications in support of the editorial architecture, and then develop a unique design and dedicated signage to reflect the publication’s specificities and rhythm.
